Information session held in Male’ on consequences of unsafe abortion, 2010

NARRATIVE REPORT

 Although this activity was originally planned to be held in Hdh. Atoll, the location was later changed to Male’. The forum was held in collaboration with Machangoalhi Avashu Office and Maldivian Network on Violence against Women. It was conducted on 30 November 2010 in Asaree Hall from 20:30pm to 22:30pm. The information given included HIV/AIDS and STIs, unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortion, family planning and EC-Pills and the effect of gender based violence on reproductive health. Information was provided via Power Point Presentations, group discussions, distribution of written materials and an informative game. There were 27 participants in this forum and all participants were women of ages 18 to 45.

Activity Details

                               I.            Sessions

The first topic discussed in the session was HIV/AIDS and STIs. With the help of a Power Point Presentation, information was given to the participants on what HIV/AIDS was and how a person can get transmitted with it. Information was also provided on how a person could prevent themselves from getting transmitted by the virus. The Common myths of HIV/AIDS were also discussed and doubts were cleared. A game was also played to help the participants understand better how HIV/AIDS can be transmitted. The participants were given information on what STIs are, types of STIs, the symptoms of STIs and how to prevent transmission of STIs. Pictures showing STI infections were also shared with the participants to help them recognize an STI easily. The treatment methods of STIs were also discussed and information was also given on the effects and complications that may arise because of an untreated STI.

The second topic discussed was Unwanted Pregnancy and Unsafe abortion. This topic too was covered with the help of a Power Point Presentation. The information provided included ways in which an unwanted pregnancy can be prevented, what unsafe abortion was and the consequences and complications that can arise because of an unsafe abortion.

The next topic discussed was on Family Planning and EC-Pills. With the help of a Power Point Presentation, the participants were provided information on the methods of family planning, the benefits of family planning and how some methods work. They were also shown samples of some family planning methods such as the IUD. Apart from this, information was provided on what EC-Pill was and how in can prevent an unwanted pregnancy.  Ways an EC-Pill can be used was also discussed.

The topic discussed next was on violence against women and how it can affect the Reproductive Health. Under this topic, discussions were done on what violence is and different types of violence. The participants were also clued up on how violence can negatively affect the reproductive health.

Before the session ended, a role play was played to highlight the issues that were discussed.

Apart from this, different Reproductive Health based models, charts and posters were displayed in the Hall and leaflets related to the issues discussed were distributed.

 2.     Constraints

As many topics were discussed in this session and since each topic needed more time, the limited amount of time available was a constraint.

 3.     Recommendations/ Feedback

                               I.            Recommendations

As the time limit was a difficulty faced while conducting this session, it is recommended to increase the time available for the session.

                              II.            Feedback

                                                             i.      When the participants were asked how they felt about the information provided in this session, all of them stated that they felt that that the information provided was very useful.

                                                           ii.      When the participants were how they felt about how the session was conducted, all of the participants stated that the way it as conduced was very good.

                                                           iii.      The participants were also asked if they would participate in a similar session if they were given a chance and all participants stated that they would participate in such a session if given a chance.

                                                           iv.      The participants were also asked if they had any suggestions and below are what they suggested.

  • Conduct more sessions like these
  • Sharing experiences related to unsafe abortion
  • Increase the time for the sessions
  • Explain the topics in more detail
  • Conduct sessions like these for people of a younger age
