The Thalassemia Laboratory and Diagnostic Services were established in 1992, with a significant milestone reached in 2005 when Thalassemia DNA testing was introduced. Since then, the laboratory has provided a range of essential diagnostic and support services for individuals affected by thalassemia and related genetic conditions. This comprehensive range of
services provides vital support for individuals living with thalassemia, helping them manage the condition through early diagnosis, genetic counseling, and access to specialized care.

Static Clinic:
The static clinic offers essential diagnostic and counseling services for thalassemia patients and families.
Thalassemia Screening: Testing to identify individuals who may carry thalassemia traits or have thalassemia.
DNA Thalassemia Analysis: Genetic testing to confirm the presence of thalassemia mutations.
Blood Grouping: Blood type identification, which is essential for transfusion
compatibility.
Hb/PCV Testing: Hemoglobin (Hb) and Packed Cell Volume (PCV) testing for detecting anemia and other related conditions.
Genetic Counseling: Counseling for individuals and families to provide information and guidance about thalassemia, its inheritance, and management options.
Health Promotion: Focuses on spreading awareness about thalassemia and G6PD deficiency.
Awareness Sessions on Thalassemia and G6PD: Educational sessions to inform the community about the prevention, diagnosis, and management of thalassemia and G6PD deficiency.

HLA Typing and Prenatal Diagnosis (PND): The laboratory facilitates HLA typing and prenatal diagnosis by arranging appointments at Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore, Tamil Nadu. Blood samples from clients are collected and transported to CMC Vellore for further testing.
Psycho-Social Support Services:
In collaboration with the Thalassemia Society of Maldives and Maldives Blood Services, the laboratory offers psycho-social support to patients and their families, helping them cope with the emotional and social challenges associated with the condition.
