International Women’s Day Celebration 2010 (M. Kolhufushi)

NARRATIVE REPORT

In order to commemorate World Women’s Day 2010, M. Atoll Child Protection Centre held  a two-day awareness camp in M. Kolhufushi. According to M. Atoll CPC, this island was chosen because it is one of the most deeply affected islands due to 2004 Tsunami, which is still struggling to get back on its feet. The island is still very under developed after the Tsunami and also lacking in not only infrastructure progress, but also in awareness on various social and health issues concerning them.

M. Atoll Child Protection Centre invited Society for Health Education to take part in this event as facilitators. Since their requirement was very focused on SRHR information, SHE’s FP department facilitated the event. Both Dr. Mausooma and Nashida joined their team as facilitators from SHE.

1.     Activity Details

                               I.            Logistics: Travelling, Food and Accommodation

The travelling was in a ferry launch to and from the island. The trip took three hours, but it was very comfortable. The food was good and the meal times went according to schedule. However, the water was a problem due to island water being contaminated. Accommodation was adequate according to the facilities available.

                             II.            Sessions and Participation

Sessions include Personal hygiene, family planning, STI, HIV/AIDS, unsafe abortion and self examination of breast. Sessions took place the whole Friday. Participation was poor. as the expected number did not turn up. No willingness to participate were shown to the programme, or to any request made by island administration. Adolescent turnout was good with 49 participants. Information was disseminated via power point presentation, leaflets, model, flip chart and group discussions.

                          III.            Team

The team consisted of two staff from RH department: Dr. Mausooma Kamaluddeen and Nashidha Sobry.

2.     Constraints

The organizers at M. Atoll were very new to organizing such an event, and hence, keeping to schedules and the flow of events were not very smooth. The organizers also could not gather people at the given times. This showed very poor attendance. The targets could not be reached due to these constraints and a lot of effort in terms of time and financial means, were wasted.

3.     Recommendations/ Feedback

It is recommended to have more such events on a larger scale with more awareness (towards the importance of these events) in the future, in order to get more participation from these islands.

4.     Way Forward

When organizing with other parties, the best way to make an event successful is to meet with them and work more closely with the other organizers.
