Seminar for religious leaders on unsafe abortion and HIV 2010

NARRATIVE REPORT

Through an initiation by the Center for Community Health and Disease Control (CCHDC), this seminar was jointly organized by CCHDC and SHE for religious scholars with the aim of sensitizing them on SRH issues such as HIV/AIDS and Unsafe Abortion.

1.     Activity Details

In order to begin the seminar, the participants were given a presentation on the National response to HIV/AIDS, followed by some information on what HIV/AIDS was.

Then, a panel discussion on HIV/AIDS was held. The scholars were explained that HIV/AIDS is a matter of concern in Muslim countries too and that the distribution of condom will reduce the incidence of HIV infection. Their views were taken on the religious aspect of issuing condoms and the religious restrictions on the issue. They were asked for their belief as to whether distribution of condoms could be paving way for certain sexual behaviors and the scholars were also explained to that if condoms were not distributed, it may lead to risky behaviors eventually leading to increased HIV infection.

Discussions were also done on how much and for whom condoms should be distributed – whether to individuals, unmarried couples or only to married couples and the extent to which information on HIV can be informed or published to the Muslim community.

Then, opinions were shared among the participants and facilitator on the ways in which HIV infection rates can be reduced. Some of the scholars suggested raising religious awareness among the parents and other relevant people through media Campaigns and introducing some services for example providing religious counseling in VCT centers. From their point of view, this could lead to lower HIV infection rate as they felt that risky behavior is caused as a result of lack of faith in the religion. Also, the scholars do consider the use of condoms a temporary solution to the problem rather than a permanent solution. For the long term, it was suggested that cooperation with the policy makers to amend laws that encourage risky behavior could also help prevent HIV infection.

During the discussions, it was observed that there were misconceptions based on the use of some contraceptives such as condoms. Some scholars did mention that the use of condom is not healthy even for married couples.

The topic of unsafe abortion was also discussed. The scholars were given information on what unsafe abortion was and the consequences of unsafe abortion. Some statistics were also shared with the scholars. They were explained the areas SHE is working on regarding abortion and discussions were made on the view point of the scholars towards abortion and their input to reduce incidence of unsafe abortion.

2.     Constraints

A difficulty faced in this activity was gathering the scholars. Since the activity was held during the holidays, most of the religious scholars who were invited were unable to attend the seminar.

3.     Recommendations/ Feedback

It was suggested that policy makers be invited along with the religious leaders for future a seminars like this. This is so as the participants too felt that a more effective discussion can be made with both these parties present.
