International Youth day celebration at National Library, 2010

NARRATIVE REPORT

In conjunction with International Youth Day, The National Library of Maldives invited SHE to organize information sessions for youth of 15- 25 years of age, mostly about life skills. However, SHE decided that such sessions would be maximized if Thalassaemia and SRH could be incorporated in to this.

                               I.            Sessions and Participation

MORNING SESSIONS

The first session of the workshop was held from 9:00am to 12:00pm. In the first part of this session, SHE Thalassaemia Laboratory’s technologist provided information to the participants about thalassaemia. Information about the implications of two carriers marrying, the                                                                                                                                                                                                                      types of carriers, treatment of thalassaemia affected children, why DNA is done… etc was given to the participants. The participants did clarify some of the misconceptions such as if thalassaemia would be cured once the person reaches a certain age and how the testing for thalassaemia could be done. The second part was facilitated by SHE’s counseling department. In this session, information was given to participants regarding life skills such as communication, anger and stress management. The participation and response from the participants was good for this session since all of the participants stated that they enjoyed the session very much and thought that the session was useful.

A total of 13 participants, 5 boys and 8 girls participated in this half of the workshop.

AFTERNOON SESSIONS

In the second half of the workshop which was held from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, the first session was facilitated by the senior technologist of SHE, Zileena. In this session too, information was provided about thalassaemia. It was observed that the participants were very interested in the topic since they did clarify any questions or doubts that they had.

The second session of this half was facilitated by Thoma and Mariyam Adam, a member of SHE. This session like the session in the previous half was about providing the participants information about life skills issues such as anger and stress management and effective communication skills. The participants in the session showed a lot of interest in the session as they discussed their doubts with the facilitators and enjoyed the session as a whole. A total of 16 participants participated in this session.

Some of the doubts the participants discussed were ways in which communication, anger and stress management could affect relationships and what can be done to improve such issues.

——————-

From the evaluation forms filled by the participants, it could be seen that:

  • Most participants felt that the sessions were very useful.
  • They would be willing to participate in another such session.
  • Many of them wanted more in-depth information from one-on-one sessions.

The library had set up everything before hand, hence, it was very stress-free and smooth during the sessions. Powerpoint point presentations were used in both counseling sessions to discuss the topics in a more interesting and understandable way. Apart from this, energizers were used in both sessions in both half’s of the workshop to make the sessions more exiting. Membership forms were distributed to all the participants, however, none of them have yet returned the forms back to SHE. Also, CDs and leaflet packs were distributed to the participants.

The feedback from the national library was also very positive and they wanted to invite SHE for more such information sessions.

Certificate of Participation:

The library also printed certificates of participation, but we were unable to distribute them due to SHE’s CEO not being able to sign. The certificates were sent to SHE and all the participants would receive a certificate of participation by SHE.

Media Coverage:

The sessions were covered by TVM in their news.

2.     Constraints

Everything for the session went quite smoothly. However, the difficulty of getting resource personals is a big constraint.

3.     Recommendations/ Feedback

Need for more trained resource personals on various topics.
