In-house training session for staff of SHE, 2010

NARRATIVE REPORT

In order to build the Human Resource (staff)’s capacity, it was decided to hold information/training sessions on Work Ethics and other work efficiency related areas. There were many occasions in which staff raised issues of not knowing or understanding the way other departments work or the service provided. Hence, in addition to information on work ethics and work efficiency, this project also aimed to enhance the knowledge of all staff on what is being done by different departments of SHE.

1.     Activity Details

The sessions were conducted on a time line spread along the days of October until December. The sessions were conducted after work hours. The duration varied from 1-4 hours for different sessions.

Sessions were conducted as follows:

  • Thalassaemia Information Session on 21st October 2010

Information was given with the help of presentation. The session was conducted from 1.30pm until 3.00pm. Mariya gave basic information about thalassaemia, the prevalence of thalassaemia in Maldives and also explained the tests done in laboratory and how SHE laboratory works. While most staff found the session interesting, there were few comments that some parts of the session was technical. The session ended with question and answers followed by refreshments.

  • HIV Information Session on 24th November 2010

This session was organized by SHE Global Fund. The session started after lunch at 2.00pm and lasted until 4.00pm. Information was provided to the participants through ice-breaker games regarding HIV/AIDS.  The games conducted included two games before the information session: pairing up to answer a true or false sheet, to find out knowledge of the participants, transmission games to help participants understand how HIV and other STIs could be transmitted from one another. The facilitator then gave a short presentation on STIs and HIV/AIDS, followed by questions and answers. One last game was conducted to further clarify the misunderstandings regarding the topics. Mr. Hameed then addressed the importance of HIV prevention knowledge in the workplace and the importance of VCT. The session ended with the demonstration of safe sex practice using condoms.

All the staff who participated enjoyed the session thoroughly. Everyone participated actively in games, answering question and sharing what they know about HIV/AIDS, as well as asking questions.

  • SRH Information Session on 25th November 2010

This session started at 1.30pm and continued until 3.00pm. With the aid of powerpoint presentations, Dr. Mausooma explained the services provided in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinic of SHE. This was followed by information about STIs, Emergency Contraceptive pills and Unsafe abortion. After explaining all these, questions asked by staff was answered by Dr. Mausooma. The session ended with refreshments.

All the staff who participated enjoyed the session and noted that they learnt a lot of information. Some of them requested for another session on gender and violence issues.

  • Counselling Information Session on 28th November 2010

This session was also conducted for about one and half hours starting from 1.30pm. The facilitators gave information about basic counseling, the traits of a counselor, as well as procedures used by SHE counseling department when giving counseling to clients.  After these information, the participants went into a discussion about issues that is dealt in counseling sessions, which was followed by questions and answers. All the staff actively took part in the discussions.

  • Ethics in the Workplace Session on 29th, 30th December 2010

The sessions were conducted from 2-4pm on the above mentioned dates. The facilitator started the first day with ice breakers and explained what Ethics was, the importance of it in a workplace, elements in ethics and the difference between ethics and morals. All these were followed by in-depth group discussions and question and answer sessions.  The second day concentrated on introduction to work ethics, what it was and how employees and employers are affected by it. This was also followed by discussions and case studies, which helped the staff to apply and understand how this works in the organization.  All the staff were engaged in the sessions and actively participated in the discussions.

2.     Constraints/ Recommendations and Feedback

  • Some of the constraints highlighted were that some of the staff were not able to participate
  • Conflict of language: If the presentation is in Dhivehi, the foreign staff does not understand, and when in English, some of the Maldivian staff cannot understand.
