Printing of Asunra Booklet 2010

NARRATIVE REPORT

Since thalassaemia is a core component of SHE’s mandate, support for thalassaemia has been an integral part of this component. Under the support for thalassaemia, SHE aims to provide up-to-date information about thalassaemia treatment to the thalassaemics of Maldives. Hence, since Asunra is the newest medicine around for chelation, and because this information is in great demand, SHE took the initiative to design and distribute the leaflet containing information about Asunra.

1.     Activity Details

The project coordinator initiated the activity after National Thalassaemia Centre (NTC) gave her the booklet to translate it into Dhivehi. NTC stressed on the importance of this booklet, as Asunra was a very new chelating medicine and also because most of the thalassaemics and their parents were not aware of the complete and correct information regarding this new medicine.

The activity was then proposed to the management in May, who decided this was a good initiative. Since then, the translated version was given to graphic designer to design and also given to various people to proofread.

The first design presented quite few problems finding quotations, as it, when unfolded, was larger than an A2 paper. This made it difficult in getting quotations and also the two quotation given were quite expensive.

The leaflet was then re-designed to fit A3 by another program section staff, proofread for the final time by laboratory technologist.  Quotations were requested for both 2000 and 1000 copies. Since the amount for 2000 copies were too much and since this leaflet would be used only for thalassaemics, it was decided to print 1000 copies only.

All the leaflets were delivered to SHE within 5 days after purchasing order from M7 and 700 leaflets were delivered to National Thalassaemia Centre 23rd June 2010.

2.     Constraints/ Recommendations

The project which was given a time line of two weeks, stretched on to nearly 1 and half months because of the issues of completing its design. Hence, it is suggested for all designers to keep in mind the printable length of materials for the purpose of cost-effectiveness and saving time.
