International Youth Day has been celebrated every year on the 12th of August, since 1999. International Youth Day is the best time to commemorate the power and strength of the youth all around the globe. It is meant as an opportunity for governments and other interested parties to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. The theme for International Youth Day 2012 is “Building a Better World: Partnering with Youth“.
In Maldives, youth is defined between the ages of 18 and 34. According to the census 2006, youth comprises of 31.9% of the total population, out of which 51.1% are women and 48.9% are men.
Concerts, workshops, cultural events and meetings involving national and local government officials as well as youth organizations take place around the world in honor of International Youth Day.
Since 2010, a volunteering committee known as the Young Young Volunteers (YYV) has been established by SHE, in order for the Maldivian youth population to become more actively involved in society. YY volunteers take part in SHE related events such as the AIDS Day Music Show, 2011 and Children’s Day, 2012.
Some activities that we have planned with Youth are:
- Meeting with Deputy minister ( Ministry of Human Resources, Youth and Sports)
- September 1st – Theatre forum for a photo shoot to mark IPPF’s 60th Anniversary
- Refresher training for YY Volunteers
- Nominations for the YYV (Young Young Volunteers training)
