Participation in World Health Day event, April 2012

NARRATIVE REPORT

1.     Introduction

Every year, World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the founding of WHO in 1948. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of concern for WHO. The topic of World Health Day in 2012 is Ageing and health with the theme “Good health adds life to years”.

2.     Summary

This year, to celebrate World Health Day in Maldives, Centre for Community Health and Disease Control (CCHDC) organized a fair to raise awareness on ageing and health. In this fair, six different NGOs participated (SHE, Manfa, Diabetic society of Maldives, Maldives Red Crescent, Care society and ARC), and a health magazine was launched. The fair was split into two segments, evening and night. The evening segment was from 04:00 pm to 06:00 pm. The night segment was from 08:00 to 10:30 pm. The evening segment was shown live on TVM.

We undertook a stall for counseling and stress management, and sexual reproductive health. In this stall, information was given on stress and how to manage it. Also, sexual reproductive health information was given on a one-to-one basis, and leaflets were distributed.

3.     Activity Details

I.            Games

An area for coloring for kids was allocated near SHE stall. About 150 students participated. The evening segment was shown live on TVM and the kids near SHE stall were interviewed.

II.            Information Given:

-Information on stress and how to manage it was given at the stall. Stress assessment forms, “How Stressed Are You?” were given out, and after the results were evaluated, customers were given counseling on how to manage stress. 15 people participated.

–         Sexual and Reproductive Health information was also given. Information on Hypertension, Diabetes, Family Planning, osteoporosis and healthy food and eating habits were provided on a one-to-one basis. 25 people participated.

 III.            IEC dissemination:

A table was set at the SHE stall area for the provision of information as well as dissemination of IEC materials.

  • 437 leaflets disseminated in SRH related topics.
  • 304 leaflets disseminated in general health topics
  • 123 leaflets disseminated in stress related topics.

4.     Constraints

  • Noise level was very high, because music stage was directly in front of stall; thus, it was impossible to give information comfortably.
  • Also, most people were attracted towards the show, instead of the stalls.
  • Space was restricted, as the stall was very small.

5.     Recommendations

  • It would have been better if both the sections (SRH and Counseling) were provided with separate stalls, as the space was not enough for both the sections to easily carry out their activities…
