Health Trip to L. Gan, April 2012

NARRATIVE REPORT

1.      Summary

The activity was an initiative of L. Gan Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani School and was being conducted in collaboration with SHE. It was held from 26 – 28 April 2012. Through this trip, information will be provided to Students, parents and teachers and youth on topics related to life skills, sexual and reproductive health and thalassaemia. The sessions were facilitated by staff from SHE.

2.      Activity Details

 I.            Travelling, Food and Accommodation

As per prior agreement, food and accommodation for whole the team and flight fares of three members was provided by Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani School. The flight fares for the remaining team were borne by SHE.

II.            Sessions

A detailed schedule of the sessions to be conducted was developed and shared with all the team members and the organizers from L. Gan. The sessions were held from Thursday night till Saturday afternoon. The topics covered were as follows.

–          Life Skills

–          Goal Setting

–          Sexual and Reproductive Health

–          Thalassaemia

–          Advocacy on life skills

–          Parenting

–          HIV/AIDS

 

Sessions on Parenting

The sessions were facilitated by Shiyama Anwar and Iyasha Leena from the Counselling and Psychosocial Services of SHE. Through the session, the parents were provided information on issues such as how to understand the physical, psychological, and emotional changes that occur in adolescents and how to identify the needs of children. Apart from this, discussions were done on Maslow’s Hierarchy and what the children are doing to fulfill these needs and what our role is in facilitating for the fulfillment of these needs. As the parents will have problems, distractions and strong feelings in their daily lives, the importance of identifying the underlying feelings when they are angry and what can be done to help own self so that their children can be safe and secure was  discussed and explained. Through the activity “power walk” the parents were also provided a chance to understand how best to communicate when they are having a problem with their child’s behavior.

Session on life skills

The topics covered during the session included Communication, Assertiveness and Self-Esteem and was facilitated by Thoma Abdul Samad and Iyasha Leena from the Counselling and Psychosocial Services of SHE. The sessions on Life Skills were conducted for the students of Grade 10 only. Sessions were conducted through group activities using role-plays, brainstorming and group presentations.  Energizers and Icebreakers were linked to each session as part of the learning.

Session on HIV/AIDS

The session was conducted for students of grade 10 and out of school youth. Information was provided on what HIV was, modes of transmission and ways to prevent transmission of HIV. VCT testing for HIV was also provided for the out of school youth who participated in the sessions.

Session on Goal Setting

The sessions on goal setting was conducted for students of Grade 9 and 11 and was facilitated by Thoma Abdul Samad and Iyasha Leena.

Through “cluster game” the students were guided to identify and state what they would like to be doing in the future. The “Fork Road” was shown and explained to the students. And they were guided to identify the characteristics /tasks they will have/perform and also their environment, physical attributes and relationships when they have achieved this dream. Apart from this they were also provided information on the steps that are to be taken in order to achieve a goal and in small groups the ‘five friends” of goal setting was applied to one selected goal.

Sessions on Life Skills advocacy

The session was conducted for teachers and was facilitated by Shiyama Anwar and Abdul Hameed. After community building, an activity was done for the teachers to identify the existing issues in the community and to understand how it feels to have unmet needs and be without power. After this, the life skills approach was presented and discussed. The teachers were also given opportunities through activities to explain and explore their values and why teachers and students may get into conflicts over their beliefs and opinions.

Session on Puberty

It was conducted for the students of grades 9 and 10 and was facilitated by Fathimath Naila, Mariyam Huda and Azlifa from the SRH department of SHE. . The session highlighted the changes of puberty physical, cognitive, moral and emotional development during puberty.

Session on unsafe abortion and family planning

Through these sessions, each family planning method was explained in detail including how it works, side effects, who and who cannot use certain methods. Also, information was provided to the participants on the the definitions on unsafe abortion as per the World Health Organization, statistics, its health effects and the consequences.

Sessions on EC Pills

A session on emergency contraception was conducted for service providers focusing on emergency contraceptive pill (EC Pill). The attendees for the session were doctors and nurses of Laamu Gan Regional Hospital. The session was facilitated by SRH department staff.

Information session on Thalassaemia

The information sessions on thalassaemia were conducted for students and adults and were facilitated by Mariya Saeed and Asha Abdul Kareem from the Thalassaemia Diagnostic Services of SHE. Information was provided on components such as what thalassaemia were treatment methods, different types of thalassaemia and symptoms of a thalassaemia major. Statistics on the incidence of thalassaemia was also shared with the participants.

3.      Constraints/Difficulties

–          The number of participants was less than expected due to lack of support

4.      Recommendations/ Feedback

–          It is suggested that a set meal menu be provided to the organizers from the islands  and ensure that meals are set as per schedule

–          It is recommended that an SRH session be arranged for students of grades 12 if they are available
