Health Trip to B. Thulhaadhoo, April 2012

 NARRATIVE REPORT

1.      Summary

The programme was an initiative of B. Thulhaadhoo School and was conducted in collaboration with SHE. One of the main purposes of the trip was to provide information to students on life skills and inform parents and teachers on the importance of including life skills programmes in the school curriculum. Apart from the sessions on life skills, information was also provided on different areas such as Sexual and Reproductive Health, HIV/STIs, Thalassaemia, Nutrition and Effective Parenting. Screening for Thalassaemia, DNA testing and Voluntary Counselling and Testing for HIV was also provided during the trip.

 2.      Activity Details

I.            Travelling, Food and Accommodation

Travel to the island was arranged via launch.  It took around approximately 3 hours to reach the island from Male’. Food and accommodation was arranged accordingly to all team members. As the prior agreement, transport, food and accommodation for 3 team members were borne by B. Thulhaadhoo School.

II.            Sessions

A session schedule was developed and shared with all the team members and the organizers from B. Thulhaadhoo.  The sessions were held from Thursday night till Saturday afternoon. The topics covered were as follows.

–          Assertiveness

–          Self-Esteem

–          Goal Setting

–          Parenting

–          Life Skills Advocacy

–          Unsafe Abortion

–          Family Planning

–          Puberty

–          Personal Hygiene

–          Thalassaemia

–          Nutrition

–          HIV/AIDS

Sessions on Parenting

The sessions were conducted for parents of the student’s studying in B. Thulhaadhoo School. Through the sessions information was provided to parents on:

–          How to understand the changes that occur in adolescents

–          Ways to identify the needs of children, whether our expectations from them are realistic and what challenges they face in raising children. .

–          The importance of identifying the underlying feelings when they are angry and what can be done to help own self so that their children can be safe and secure

–          Through the activity “power walk” the parents were provided a chance to understand how best to communicate when they are having a problem with their child’s behavior.

Session on life skills

The sessions were facilitated by Thoma Abdul Samad from the counselling and Psychosocial Services of SHE. The topics covered in thi session included Communication, Assertiveness and Self esteem. A total of 35 students participated in the session.

Session on HIV/AIDS

The session was conducted for students of grade 10 and youth of school youth. Information was provided on what HIV was, modes of transmission and ways to prevent transmission of HIV. VCT testing for HIV was also provided for the out of school youth who participated in the session. A total of 44 people were reached through this session.

Session on Goal Setting

The participants of this session included 72 students from grades 8 and 9The students were guided to identify and state what they would like to be doing in the future. With a help of a ‘Folk Road’, they were individually identified the characteristics /tasks they will have/perform and also their environment, physical attributes and relationships when they have achieved this dream. Apart from this, they were also provided information on the steps that are to be taken in order to achieve a goal.

Sessions on Life Skills advocacy

The session was conducted for teachers and was facilitated by Shiyama Anwar and Abdul Hameed. After community building, an activity was done for the teachers to identify the existing issues in the community and to understand how it feels to have unmet needs and be without power. After this, the life skills approach was presented and discussed. The teachers were also given opportunities through activities to explain and explore their values and why teachers and students may get into conflicts over their beliefs and opinions.

Session on Puberty and Personal Hygiene

It was conducted for the students of grades 8, 9 and 10 and was facilitated by Fathimath Naila and Mariyam Huda. Information was provided on the importance and consequences of poor personal hygiene. Apart from this, they were also provided information on the changes that their body will go through during puberty.

Session on unsafe abortion and family planning

The sessions were facilitated by Fathimath Naila and Mariyam Huda. The different types of family planning methods were explained to the participants including how it is used, their benefits and side effects. They were also provided information on unsafe abortion and its consequences.
Information session on Thalassaemia

The information sessions on thalassaemia were conducted for students and adults and were facilitated by Mariya Saeed and Asha Abdul Kareem from the Thalassaemia Diagnostic Services of SHE. Information was provided on components such as what thalassaemia were treatment methods, different types of thalassaemia and symptoms of a thalassaemia major. Statistics on the incidence of thalassaemia was also shared with the participants.

Sessions on Nutrition

The participants of this session included students of grades 8,9 and 10 and was facilitated by Hussain Haleem, a nutritionist. Information was provided on the benefits of different types of fruits and vegetables. Apart from this, several house visits were done to provide them information on nutrition.

4.      Constraints

The number of participants was higher than expected for some sessions; hence, this created some difficulties for the facilitators.
