Society for Health Education (SHE) is a nation-wide non-profit, non-government organization well accepted by the country for its work in the field of health and social well-being of all the communities within the country. After 24 years, the organization has become one of the largest, most vibrant NGOs in the Maldives which not only addresses issues concerning women, but the issues of Thalassaemia, HIV/AIDS, Psychosocial counseling, and reproductive health including SRHR.

The Society for Health Education is seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead the organization into the next significant growth stage of the organization. The CEO will require exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, a proven track record of leadership capability and solid NGO and development sector experience and knowledge.

The CEO will in consultation with the Executive Board be responsible for the overall vision, direction and organizational management of the NGO, including day to day managerial issues and assure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves its mission.

The CEO will need to be a charismatic and practical leader, committed to directing and driving the daily operations of the organization, fundraising requirements and financial transparency of the organization and deliver quality service to SHE stakeholders with a long term strategic focus.

 1.     Summary

This activity was an initiative by the senior management of Zaailing Pre-school and was conducted in conjunction with the celebration of the school’ Professional Development Day, 26 January 2012. The session was facilitated by Mariyam Huda and Azlifa from the Sexual and Reproductive Health Services of SHE.

2.     Activity Details

I.            Sessions and Participation

A total of 9 teachers participated in the session. The topics taken were based on consequences of unsafe abortion and Family Planning. The preschool teachers were given information:

• Types of Family Planning Methods including their side effects and how certain methods functions.
• The importance of family planning and its effects on women’s health.
• The definition of unsafe abortion, consequences and statistics of unsafe abortion.

3.     Feedback

At the end of the session participants were encouraged to ask questions. Several questions on both the topics were raised by the participants. There was a very positive energy from all the participants in clearing a number of myths related to both family planning methods and unsafe abortion. A drawback was the time limitation as one hour was inadequate to complete both the session and entertain the participants’ queries.

4.     Conclusion:

Overall the visit was a success. The participants expressed that they had gained new knowledge and cleared their several myths on these topics. The management of the school was very enthusiastic in arranging these sessions for the parents of their students in the near future.

• For them to fully understand the definition of child abuse and types of abuse – physical, sexual, emotional, & neglect
• To be able to identify the physical, behavioral and emotional signs and symptoms of child abuse
• The proper steps to take if and when ever they identify if the child is in an abusive relationship and what to do if it is suspected

Apart from this, the importance of documentation was emphasized and a format for record keeping was also provided.

FINANCIAL REPORT

1.     Summary

The activity was conducted through an initiation by F. Feeali Development Society (FDS). As in other Multi-Purpose Health Trips, this trip also included the provision of doctor consultation services along with awareness sessions and thalassaemia screening services.

2.     Activity Details

I.            Travelling, Food and Accommodation

Travel to the island was arranged by SHE and was done via launch. It took around 2 hours 30 minutes to reach the island from Male’. However, as the sea was very rough during the return trip, it took around 3 hours to reach Male’.

e travel arrangement for the trip was arranged by SHE and the Food and Accommodation was provided by FDS.

Food and accommodation during the trip was arranged by FDS. The meal times were communicated with FDS prior to traveling and it was arranged accordingly.

Members of FDS were at the jetty of Feeali to receive the team from SHE on arrival to the island. The accommodation arrangements were made well and all team members were comfortable with it. The team stayed in different rooms located in different parts of the island. However, this did not cause any difficulties for the team in communicating with each other or meeting up for sessions or meals.

 II.            Awareness Sessions

A prior session schedule was developed and shared with all the team members and the organizers from Feeali.  The sessions were held starting from Thursday night. The topics covered were as follows.

Session on Gender Based Violence

The GBV session was conducted for 8 girls of age 18 and above an was facilitated by Thoma Abdul Samad from the counseling and psychosocial services of SHE. Following is what was discussed in the session.

-          In-depth and accurate information about GBV

-           life skills and contribute to behavior change through self-awareness

-          Prevent violence from happening by challenging the attitudes and behaviors which foster it

-          Learning to use techniques such as becoming more assertive to feel strengthened to take control over own life.

Apart from this, a 1 hour session on GBV was also taken for the students of grade 10.

Sessions on Parenting

The session was conducted for parents and was facilitated by Aminath Waheedha, a volunteer of SHE and Iyasha Leena from the counseling and psychosocial services. Following is what was discussed in the session

Through group activities, information was provided for parents on understanding the changes that occur in adolescents. Also, a group activity was done to identify the needs of children, whether our expectations from them are realistic and what challenges they face in raising children. Discussions were also done on the importance of identifying the underlying feelings when they are angry and finding help for own self so that their children can be safe and secure. Information was also provided on how to communicate effectively when they are having a problem with their child’s behavior.

Information session on Nutrition

The session was facilitated by Shiyama Anwar from the counseling and psychosocial services and Aminath Mohamed, a volunteer of SHE. The session was held for students of grades 7, 8 and 9. They were provided information on the importance of nutritious foods and why they need to cultivate the right eating habits. They were also provided information on the types of healthy food to help them understand what to eat at every meal to meet the proper nutritious requirement.

For the students of grades 8 and 9, a taste testing activity was also conducted where the students made various nutritious drinks from different fruits and vegetables that they brought to school.

Through a quiz, information was also provided to students on what foods belong to which nutrition group.

Session for Students on Puberty, HIV/STIs, personal Hygiene and Growing up

This session was conducted for students of grades 7, 8 and 9 and was facilitated by Nashidha Sobry and Azlifa from the . Information was provided to them on what HIV/STIs were and how it could be transmitted. Also, information was provided on how a good personal hygiene could be maintained and the health effects of personal hygiene.

Session for adults on STIs, Unsafe abortion and Family Planning

The session was conducted for adults and was facilitated by Mariyam Huda, Nashidha Sobry and Fathimath Naila. Through these sessions, the participants were informed of the importance of sexuality and reproductive health for women, family and community as a whole.

Under the topic of unsafe abortion, the participants were provided information on what unsafe abortion were its effects and consequences. Along with this, statistics on unsafe abortion was also provided.

Under the topic of family planning, the participants were explained in detail each family planning methods, including its effects and how certain method functions.

Through the session on HIV/STIs, the participants were provided information such as what STIs are, symptoms of an STI and how it could be transmitted.

Information session on Thalassaemia

The information sessions on thalassaemia were conducted for students and adults and was facilitated by Mariya Saeed and Asha Abdul Kareem from the Thalassaemia Diagnostic Services of SHE. Information was provided on components such as what thalassaemia was, treatment methods, different types of thalassaemia and symptoms of a thalassaemia major. Statistics on the incidence of thalassaemia was also shared with the participants.

Sessions on Life Skills

The sessions were conducted over 2 days for the students of grade 10. The topics covered were Communication, Assertiveness and Self-Esteem and was facilitated by Mariyam Saamira from the Counseling and Psychosocial Services of SHE. The Sessions were conducted in an interactive manner through group activities, role-plays, brainstorming and group presentations.  Energizers and Icebreakers were linked to each session as part of the learning.

3.     Doctor Consultation and Thalassaemia Screening Service

Doctor consultation was provided by a pediatric doctor, Dr. Niyasha and a Medical Officer, Dr. Ramsha. It Consultations took place at the Feeali Health Centre from Thursday night till Saturday afternoon. Although the service was open for the whole community free of charge, only a few people visited.

Thalassaemia screening service was provided from 1430 – 1530 on 14 January 2012. During this time, no one was screened.

4.     Media

A media briefing was developed and sent to VTV, DhiTV and MNBC. It was aired during the news on 13 January 2012.

5.     Constraints

Due to a delay by FDS in obtaining the approvals from the health centre, difficulties were faced in obtaining the final approval from the Ministry of Health.

7.     Way Forward

• Re assure safety personal hygiene of accommodation for the team members travelling from SHE during their stay at the island.
• It is recommended to contact directly with the relevant school or other agency by SHE to avoid any unnecessary delays.
• More marketing of the event has to be done to gain full support of potential participants.
• It is recommended that the resource personnel meet with the organizers from the island to make them understand the importance of such events and thus, enable them to persuade more people to seek the services provided during the trip.
• Collaborate with committees such as Women’s Development Committees when conducting trips as they would be more persuasive in getting people to participate in the activities conducted during the trip.
• It is also suggested to get an endorsement letter from the NGO from collaborating islands to ensure their commitment throughout the event.
• Develop an in-house feedback form to get the feedback of the activity from the team members from SHE.

Introduction:

HIV/AIDS prevalence is low in the Maldives, however, many research studies show that high risk behaviors such as drug use, low condom use, commercial sex, men having sex with men, sexual violence are all present especially among young people.

This project aims to advocate for a HIV/AIDS and STI free future generation through implementation of comprehensive evidence based prevention strategies, responsible sexual behavior, including use of condoms, evidence based and skilled youth specific HIV education mass media interventions and the provision of youth friendly health services.

Many youth are reluctant to gain information on SRH through formal means (clinics, forums or sessions). As the primary objective of this project is to reach to a large population of youth, hosting a  music show with an embedded theme would create an environment where youth will be able to gain information on HIV/AIDS through a more youth friendly setting , since Youth is an important target audience for HIV prevention in the Maldives and in addition, youth culture is shared to a large extent, so the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of today’s youth about HIV risk and behavior would in-turn make a difference to the society . This event in turn would enable us to pave way and break the existing communication gap between the youth and the organization, ensuring to build relationship between the youth groups, promote and direct them to proper SRH services.

Description of the event:

This show was organized by SHE in support of UNFPA to increase awareness among the youth population on HIV/AID by means of a youth friendly approach. Since the date of the event was planned to be held during the month of December, the music show was held in conjunction with World AIDS Day.

 “Act Aware” music show was held on the 9th of December 2010, at artificial beach. The show began at 9.30 and was hosted by a youth volunteer of SHE and a popular host from Youth TV.

During the show messages were continuously displayed on the screen, as well as video and audio clips advocate on HIV and STIs prevention.

Activities

1.      Band Performances

A total of 3 bands performed during the show; Traphic Jam, Dhamaanu Boduberu and 1 Knight Stand. These are the most popular bands in Maldives today.

During the performances, different band members conveyed messages on HIV /AIDS/ STI’s to the audience.

2.     Launching of theme song

A song was composed specially for this show and this year’s World AIDS Day 2010 by the band Traphic Jam. The first live performance of this song was done during the show.

The name of the song is “Hurahakun Fudhaalama” which means to use condoms to protect oneself from HIV /STI.

This song will also be sent to different media sources (TV/Radio), so that it can be broadcasted.

3.      Drama performances

A group of youth volunteers from Youth Health Café (YHC) performed skits on HIV/ AIDS.

These skits highlighted on the following points.

• For safe sex, Use condoms
• Condoms prevents STI’s
• Avoid multiple partners
• Sharing needles can spread HIV

4.      Voice of Youth

Information on HIV/AIDS was given to the audience by one of the youth volunteers of SHE.

This part of the show was conducted with interaction with the audience. Questions were asked to which the audience gave answers. If they were incorrect, the right answers were given by the youth volunteer.

Information on Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) was also provided, such as the importance of oneself getting tested and window period.  VCTC at SHE was also highlighted during this part.

Evaluation of the event:

Following are the points that were noted:

• All activities succeeded in meeting the event objectives.
• The organizing team worked well together, although this was the first of a series of the upcoming event.
• The turn-up of youth exceeded over the estimated target number of 200-300
• Support from stakeholders from beginning to end of the event

Constraints:

• Duration of the project confirmation & delivery was too short, hence difficult to get time consuming things like leaflets and posters on time
• The video for the theme song was not produced on time.
• Difficulty in gaining approval from government offices as there was a great delay.
• Since November month had many holidays there was difficulty in coordinating with other offices.
• Display of advertisement posters was not done accordingly as many houses / places would not give permission to display the posters.

Recommendations

• Sponsors must be sought before hand
• Items such as printing of leaflets and production of videos that take more time must be handover beforehand.

Introduction

International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) South Asia regional Youth Network (SARYN) is a youth led network run by IPPF youth volunteers in South Asia and supported by IPPF South Asia Region Office and its 8 Member Associations. The main objectives of IPPF SARYN are to ensure meaningful youth participation within the IPPF governing system in SAR and ensuring meaningful involvement of young people at all levels of programmes and services in the MAs.

Society for Health Education (SHE) in collaboration with IPPF is working on different programmes targeting to Youth and general population. In line with this, training on sensitive issues was planned for the youth volunteer members of the organization.

Objectives

The main objectives of this 1 day training are to:

1. train the youth members on sexual violence and unsafe abortion
2. Increase general knowledge on safe /unsafe abortion and sexual violence

Activity Plan

The event was planned and coordinated by the SHE staff, and facilitated by a youth member of SHE who participated in the training on sensitive issues conducted at the regional council meeting 2010.

1.      Executive Summary

A one day session of 15 numbers of participants of age 15-24 from both genders was held to train youths on sensitive issues. Due to former other event participation, the members were very familiar with each other, and had interest in the area too.

With no ice breaking, the day started with an introduction of the topics to be discussed and a little session of familiarizing.

Session 1

The first topic was sexual diversity. At the beginning of the session, the participants were acknowledged of the different types of people that can exist, and how IPPF regards the issue.

Abortion and Sexual violence (grey area) were the two main topics that suited our country more and were more beneficial for youth volunteers.

Regarding Abortion, we started with the fact based exercise “Cross the Line” with statements about the participants own home environment, their personal life, their experience and such. So there was no argument from either side. But explanations were asked from those who would like to share, and a lot was shared. It was a successful session as the later events went on smoothly due to this discussion.

Then the short movie “Not Yet Rain” was shown, and an hour was spent on the discussions that followed. Most of the facts shown in the movie was new to the participants and were shocked. But there were also some facts that were not new to them, still were concerned. Every one believed that such a movie could have been made in our own country too.

After the movie exercise “Three corners” was done. Here participants got the choice of deciding their choice, as this is an opinion based exercise. Three options were there; agree, disagree, in-between (unsure/both).  An interesting debated went on for most of the statements. We concluded the exercise with an information giving session on abortion. Here the terms and words used were explained and also, the view of IPPF was shared.

The topic on abortion was concluded with the participants playing a drama (5 in each group) by dividing the participants into groups. Here we were able to see how much the participants have digested the topic and information, and also how much their beliefs changed from the beginning to the end.

Session 2

Next was the sexual violence (grey area). The session was started with word brainstorm exercise, on the words the participants chose on their own. After that, they were asked to paste them on a board divided into 5 parts. Acts, Victim, Culprit, Emotions……

After that an exercise was done with the board divided into two, “consensual sex act” and “Sexual Violence”. Participants were given scenarios of different acts. Participants pasted on either side. When discussed individual scenarios, some participants came up with the argument of it fitting on both sides, and of issues that fitted on neither side. So, we agreed to paste them on the centre, in-between. After the exercise the participants were told that this in-between was the “grey area” of sexual violence.

This was a long exercise and many discussions and arguments arose. But in the end of the day, we all agreed on some basic idea and rules on the “consensual sex act” and the “Sexual violence” as well as how to react to the “Grey area of sexual violence”.

How the grey area can be advocated was also discussed, and who are available in our country to do that. This exercise was also concluded with a drama, to see how much their understood.

Achievements:

• The group of volunteers who participated in the training was very enthusiastic, with interest in working with SHE in the future.

Constraints

• The number of youth who participated in the training were less, than the anticipated number
• Difficulty in getting the youth team together

1.     Summary

The activity was conducted in liaise with the National Thalassaemia Centre. Under this project, psychosocial support sessions were conducted for a group of Thalassaemics. Sessions were held twice a month for a duration of 2 consecutive months, from May to July 2011. The facilitators of the sessions were counselors from the Counseling and Psychosocial services of SHE

As the sessions were conducted at the Thalassaemia Centre, in the later stages of the project some difficulties were faced as the centre could not be opened after the official working hours.

1.     Summary

The fair was organized by Human Rights Commission of the Maldives and was held at Giyasudheen School  on the 17^th December 2011. The Fair focused on 5 thematic areas (Education, Health and disability, Migrant workers, Child, women rights) which HRCM will have their activities focused on for the upcoming 5 years. The stalls of SHE provided information on issues related to thalassaemia, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Diabetes, Nutrition and relationships. A total of 203 people were reached through the participation in the Rights Fair.

2.     Activity Details

A Game was conducted by the counseling department for the children. Through the game children were to identify some basic information about their parents. Aim of the game was to strengthen the relationship between the parent and child. The children enjoyed playing the game and learning basic information about their parents.

Thalassaemia information was given by the laboratory staff’s by using, materials prepared by the lab staff. General information on Thalassaemia was given and some personal queries were cleared. Leaflets on different health topics were distributed

3.     Constraints/Recommendations

It would have been more interesting if more customer participative games were included.

Sessions were very interactive and the public had many queries,

The environment was too loud as there were many announcements and music just next to our stall. This made the conversations a bit difficult.
